In English this semester we have been doing the Hawaiian Heroes Tournament. Each student selects a Hawaiian Hero from a list of thirty people important to Hawaiian history. I chose Queen Emma. Each class got divided into groups according to what letter their last name started with. For example, my last name starts with a W and I am at the bottom of the attendance list so I was in the last group. In our groups, the teacher paired us with someone who would be our competitor for that round. There was a total of five rounds and if you won a round you got two points. The rounds we were quiz shows, portrait, argumentative essay, day in the life, and debate. You had to do the different rounds about the hero you selected. The two people from each group with the most points went into the knockout rounds. The leaders of the groups got to choose who they wanted in their group. The first round of the knockouts was a movie trailer. The second round is skits which we are currently working on. This whole project pushed me out of my comfort zone because I am not very good at presenting. I don't like to present and talk in front of a lot of people. I am also not good at debating and arguing. My favorite round to do was the portrait because I enjoy drawing and didn't have to talk for it. A 21st-century skill I used for the Hawaiian Heroes Tournament is Global Awareness because I had learned about my hero's life and the Hawaiian culture.
